This is one of a series of eight offshore races during the season.

A disappointing group of just four yachts fronted for the long offshore race on May 25.

All boats were put together in one division for the race and, in near-perfect conditions with sunny skies and 20 knots from the south-east, the course took them from Airlie Beach, around Dent Island and home.

Wobbly Boot, Craig Piccinelli, and Anthea, Duwi Hughes, led the way and headed up the Molle Passage before crossing Whitsunday Passage to Dent Island.

La Quilter, Heather Sutton, chose to head across through Unsafe Passage then straight across to Whitsunday Island while the tide was favourable.

Anthea suffered some main sheet damage and head to pull out of the race, leaving Wobbly Boot to be the first around the south end of Dent Island against the tide and it pushed them through Dent Passage very quickly.

La Quilter and Zippy, Bernie McErlane, had to fight a stronger tide to make their way around the island.

La Quilter had to tack at least 12 times passed the lighthouse before rounding the south end of Dent, while Zippy was unable to beat the strong tide and had to pull out of the race.

Wobbly Boot won the race comfortably, finishing at mid-afternoon while La Quilter enjoyed a beautiful sunset and moon rise to finish just after dark.
