Offshore News - Challengers Cup Race 1

A glorious sunny day with 12 knot breeze greeted the fleet as they prepared for the first race in the Whitsunday Sailing Club’s challengers cup series on Sunday. This series, proudly sponsored by Ullman Sails Whitsunday, consists of 6 races, all held within Pioneer Bay, between February and November.

For the first race of the series, the race officer opted for a triangular course, giving the competitors opportunities to fly their colourful spinnakers during each lap.

A combined start for all divisions saw 9 yachts, ranging from the 7.8 metre High Tide (Shannan Hart) through to 12.4 metre boats such as Anthea (Dewi Hughes) and Twister (Kevin Fogarty).  While Twister clearly won the start, her lead was short lived as the rapid Ullman Sails (Paul Mitchell) soon got into gear, clearing out from the rest of the fleet.  So fast was the 10 metre catamaran, she completed her four lap race in the time it took the Division 2 leaders to complete complete two laps.

For everyone else, the racing was tight, with Treasure VIII (Rob Davis) leading Division 2 in front of Twister and Syzygy (Errol Goodwin) over a 4 lap course.  While Treasure VIII held a good lead on the water, the distance was not enough, allowing the consistent Twister to take the corrected time win from Syzygy and Treasure VIII

Division 3 saw High Tide (Shannan Hart) leading the pack, just ahead of Mistery (Bill Hopton), with Infarrction (Carol Roberts) a further two minutes behind.  A series of failures on Kameruka (Bob & Mark Beale) saw them struggling, finishing well behind Anthea after their 3 laps were completed.  Again, corrected time shows that winning on line honours does not always mean anything, as Infarrction came out on top, ahead of Anthea and High Tide.
