Australia Day Celebrations (2013)

Event Details

  • Sat 26 Jan 2013 (All day)
Whitsunday Sailing Club, Airlie Point

The Whitsunday Sailing Club has become the place where locals love to celebrate Australia Day with a traditional family cricket game, Aussie backyard games and a BBQ. This year the Whitsunday Regional Council will partner the Club for Airlie Beach’s biggest Australia Day celebrations.

On the water, the third year of the Dan Kane Memorial Race honours a great Aussie battler and a popular member of the Sailing Club. Sailability will also be offering 10 minute sailing sessions to raise funds and look for new volunteers to help with this charity. On the land, family fun kicks off at 2pm downstairs with a jumping castle, face painting, popular Aussie backyard games for the kids and cricket on the lawn.  Live music will be provided by Gunnaduo and Jon Griffin.

Club Manager Angela Rae says, “the more people the merrier as we love to celebrate the day with all our club members, friends and visitors. You can bring rugs, chairs, umbrellas or sit in the shade of the balcony and enjoy the beautiful setting at the Sailing Club. Food and drink are reasonably priced and it is an easy way for kids of all ages to play outdoors and for families to enjoy themselves.”

Presentations for the Dan Kane memorial race will be held at 4pm. Council’s official ceremony will follow including trophy and Australian Day Awards presentations and the Australian Citizenship Ceremony. The Proserpine Citizens band will also play. Mayor Whitney said, “Australia Day celebrations are a fun way to celebrate our heritage and enjoy being with family and friends.  I encourage everyone to come along and support this great event.”

It’s a day for young and old to get together and celebrate our community and our country. Get your family and friends together and come down to the Whitsunday Sailing Club for a really great Australia Day on Saturday 26 January.

The bistro upstairs will be open for normal lunch and dinner services.
